Allergic reaction to face paint

Poor Laura, she only had the face paint on for a couple of hours before we wiped it off. This is how she looked when she woke up this morning. We've given her an antihistamine and she is looking a lot better.

It is a bit hard to see in the photos, however her face is red and swollen exactly in the shape of the face painting.

December block - Virtuallybequilted

I've just finished the December block for VirtuallyBeQuilted. I have fallen behind and hope to catch up over the next couple of weeks.

I procrastinated over this block and finally decided that a simple design would look best. I fussy cut all of the dark green squares.

6th birthday

I just found this post sitting in my 'drafts' area. Ruby's birthday was a few weeks ago...

The cake was a 'fairy house toadstool' made from icecream. Disaster just about struck as I carried it to the table. The icecream had begun melting and the 'cake' started sliding about on the tray. I just about dropped the whole thing.

Kwik Sew 3484 (Men's shirt)

Pattern Description:
Men's shirts have collar, short sleeves, and side hemline slits. View A has breast pocket. View B has contrast right front inset and breast pocket with contrast band at top edge. View C has contrast center panels. (From pattern envelope).

I made View A.

Pattern Sizing:
S-M-L-XL-XXL I made a M for my lean husband.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, although I omitted the side hemline slits, and I choose buttons that were too large.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, very clear easy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
My husband would have preferred a closer-fitting style.

Fabric Used:
A very cheap poplin, as this was intended to be a trial-run of the pattern. The fabric appears to be too stiff for the design (although I haven't laundered the fabric yet).

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I omitted the side hemline slits.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I will probably sew this again ... although I will modify the pattern to make it a slimmer fit from the chest down (it is fine across the shoulders).

A good basic, and casual shirt which goes together very smoothly. My husband is pleased with the shirt and wants me to make more (although he doesn't like the fabric that I used for this one).

Menu Monday - 4/1/10

A new year ... and I'm getting on the menuplanning bandwagon again. It does make the evenings a lot easier.

This week's menu is based entirely on the meat that I have in the freezer:

Monday - leftovers - Chilli Con Carne
Honey mustard chicken, with pumpkin, green beans and cauliflower
BBQ sausages and green salad
Thai beef salad
Fish cakes - with green beans, broccoli, pumpkin and frozen corn
Macaroni cheese pie - with green salad

Baking: Biscotti

Other things to look forward to this week: I'll post the recipe for Thai Beef Salad

On the sewing front: I'm about to complete a Kwiksew casual mens shirt for my hubby. I should have some photos up this week. I'll also put up photos of the bag that I made for Mum's birthday, and Ruby's Christmas outfit.

First embroidery

I have begun to teach Ruby to sew in earnest. Here she is trying her hand at embroidery. She is making a name sampler, which will become a small pillow. We have been using the book "My First Embroidery Book: A Name Sampler" by Winky Cherry. I am impressed with Ruby's dexterity and how accurately she has been able to stab the needle through the gingham. There were only a couple of spots that needed to be re-done.

She can even thread her own needle. Soon I'll have to employ her to thread my needles for me!!
